Blood Flow Restriction Training
MANUAL THERAPY TREATMENTS
What is Blood Flow Restriction Training?
- Blood flow restriction training (BFR) is a proven method of training.
- Enhances strength and endurance at a lower intensity of exercise by restricting blood flow to the targeted muscle.
- Shown to increase muscle size and strength
- Reduce rehabilitation time
- Enhance cardiovascular endurance
- Expedite recovery after intense exercise or athletic events.
What Should I Expect with Blood Flow Restriction Physical Therapy?
- Physical Therapist will assess your medical history for BFR safety.
- Determine if BFR right for you.
- Therapist will fasten a cuff around the top of your arm or leg and pump it up until we measure maximal occlusion of blood flow.
- Then, we will adjust the pressure in the cuff to restrict only a certain percentage of blood flow to the muscles while you exercise.
- BFR training exercise is not painful, but it may cause quicker fatigue.
How Does BFR Therapy Work?
- When the blood flow to a limb is reduced and the flow out of the limb is completely blocked, the muscles experience metabolic stress.
- This makes it seem like the exercise being done is more intense than it actually is.
- As a result, the body uses more muscle fibers, the concentration of metabolites increases, and this stimulates muscle strength and growth.
